Seven fees worth questioning
A field guide to recurring charges, vague labels, and statement patterns that deserve a closer look.

The short answer
Some statement charges are part of the real cost of accepting cards. Others deserve a direct question. Ask your provider to explain any recurring charge you cannot describe in plain language, and to put the answer in writing.
Seven charges to ask about
These come up often. None is automatically wrong, but each is worth understanding before you accept it as the cost of business.
- PCI non-compliance charges. If the business has completed the required validation, confirm why the fee remains.
- Batch fees. Check the amount and how often the account closes a batch.
- Statement and account-maintenance fees. Confirm what each covers and whether your agreement lists it.
- Monthly minimums. Ask how the minimum is calculated and what happens in a slow month.
- Annual or membership fees. Check the amount, when it is billed, and whether it renews automatically.
- Equipment leases. Confirm the term, the monthly cost, and what ending the lease early would cost.
- Vaguely named regulatory or program charges. Ask the provider to name exactly what each charge is and where it appears in your agreement.
Tiered statements
Tiered statements deserve careful attention. “Qualified,” “mid-qualified,” and “non-qualified” labels can make it difficult to see the underlying cost and markup. Rate changes over time can be just as important as any single line item.
Look at the whole picture
Do not evaluate a charge in isolation. Compare the full agreement, transaction mix, support included, equipment obligations, and your effective rate.
Clarity is the first win. Once the statement is understood, the merchant can decide whether the current relationship should be corrected, renegotiated, or replaced.
